Marcelo Bielsa has confirmed that Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford remains sidelined with an ongoing ankle injury.
The Lowdown: Bamford absent of late
The 28-year-old enjoyed a fantastic 2020/21 season, scoring 17 Premier League goals in the Whites’ first year back in the top-flight.
Bamford’s campaign has been a frustrating one this time around, however, with only one goal coming his way to date and an ankle problem seeing him miss out recently.
Phil Hay has offered an update from Bielsa’s press conference on how long that injury could now keep the striker out.
The Latest: Hay provides negative update
Bielsa confirmed on Thursday that the striker’s return wouldn’t arrive until after the upcoming international break, with Hay confirming the news in a 10-word update on Twitter:
“Bamford has an ankle injury – needs a few more weeks.”
The Verdict: Rodrigo in attack again?
That means Bamford won’t be available to face Watford at Elland Road on Saturday, meaning Rodrigo could again lead the line in a false nine role.
The Spaniard did well there last weekend, despite Leeds losing 2-1 at home to Aston Villa – Beren Cross gave his performance a seven-out-of-10 rating for Leeds Live – and Raphinha and Dan James could play either side of him once more.
The hope is that Bamford will be back soon, though, with his goals vital in the Whites’ quest to pull away from the relegation zone.
