Leeds: Kalvin Phillips urged to sign new deal -Leeds United Transfer Rumours

Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny has urged Kalvin Phillips to sign a new Whites deal, in order for the club to receive the biggest possible fee for him.

The Lowdown: Phillips’ future up in the air

Phillips has been a wonderful servant for Leeds, helping inspire them back into the Premier League and becoming a key player for England.

The 25-year-old continues to be linked with a move away from Elland Road, however, with some of the country’s biggest clubs circling.

The Latest: Kenny gives his take

Phillips’ current deal doesn’t expire until the summer of 2024, but Kenny has told Football Insider that a new-and-improved contract would make it easier to earn huge money for him:

“I think it’s important. These players who have come through the academy, they are still young players, still doing well, playing for England.

“I think for Leeds, very important they get him signed up.  Then if any of these big clubs, like Man United, Man City, Liverpool, are interested and do want to come in for him, they’re paying top money.

“I think it’s key and it’s good for Philips to have a bit security as well. There’s nothing better. He’s a key player, he’s been in excellent form. Sometimes, not playing makes people realise how important they are.

“England missed him and in the past Leeds have struggled when he’s not been available. It’s clear to see that he’s an important player for both club and country at the moment.”

The Verdict: Makes perfect sense

There is no guarantee that Phillips will definitely leave Leeds – he may be happy to remain at Elland Road for a number of years still – but it is vital that they prepare for his potential exit.

The midfielder’s head could be turned by a move to the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United, and while it would be a huge blow to lose him, an enormous fee would make it more bearable.

That would give Leeds the funds to spend on exciting new talent to replace Phillips, ensuring the void he leaves isn’t too great in the process.

In other news, Leeds are reportedly interested in signing a defender. Find out who it is here.
