Newcastle United fans here in the bar at the Football Transfer Tavern are still considering what could have been following their opening day Premier League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Jonjo Shelvey’s red card seemed to condemn the Magpies to a 2-0 loss to the Lillywhites who found goals through Dele Alli and Ben Davies.

This result paired with the lack of activity in the transfer window has started to worry the Newcastle fans in the Tavern, however, our landlord believes that a manager with the pedigree of Rafa Benitez will not allow his club to be relegated, and has tipped his Geordie punters that they will see great things from their club this year.

The Magpies in the Tavern are still not confident and they would like to see some areas strengthened before the transfer window slams shut, especially given the fact that many of the teams they perceive to be a similar ability to them are spending big money in strengthening their side.

The discussion has rumbled on for a while now between the Newcastle fans and with time clearly running out, it is now squeaky bum time as the talks on who Benitez needs to bring in are coming to an end.

Our landlord has listened in on the debate and has listed there two players that Newcastle should sign before the window slams shut…

Lucas Perez

Despite signing Joselu for £5million from Stoke City this week, our landlord believes Benitez will be in the market for some more attacking quality and with Lucas Perez out of favour at Arsenal, as well as struggling to get a move back to Spain. It makes sense for Newcastle to swoop in a bolster their attacking ranks.

This is a story that may go on until deadline day but the Magpies in the Tavern will be happy as long as Perez becomes a Newcastle player by the end of the window as they are seriously worried that their squad will struggle to find goals in the Premier League this season.

Kenedy

The Brazilian did not do himself any favours when he was sent home from Chelsea’s pre-season tour of Asia and our landlord believes Newcastle may swoop in and try to resurrect Kenedy’s Premier League career this season.

There is no doubting Kenedy’s talent and the Chelsea fans in the Tavern are frustrated because they know Kenedy can offer their side more but it is a case of him not fitting into Conte’s 3-4-3 style as a wingback which has seen him struggle at Stamford Bridge. Our landlord believes that Benitez’s 4-2-3-1 formation will definitely suit Kenedy more and a move will benefit all the parties involved.
