Liverpool: James Pearce reacts to late Reds victory vs Ajax

Anfield, Liverpool, Britain - September 13, 2022, Liverpool's Joel Matip celebrates scoring their second goal with Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool journalist James Pearce has shared his verdict on the ‘dramatic’ late scenes at Anfield following the club’s 2-1 victory over Ajax on Tuesday night.

The Lowdown: Liverpool’s late winner

The Reds kicked off their Champions League campaign with a disappointing 4-1 defeat at the hands of Napoli last week, but came back fighting to put on an impressive display in their second outing.

Jurgen Klopp’s side took the lead through Mohamed Salah early on, before Mohammed Kudus found the equaliser for the visitors just ten minutes later.

However, it was Joel Matip who stole the show, netting a winner for the Premier League giants in the final minute of normal time to get their first three European points on the board.

The Latest: Pearce reacts

Taking to Twitter, Pearce was full of praise for Matip and the rest of the Liverpool squad for the determination shown to go on and win the game.

He believes Tuesday night could be the catalyst the Reds ‘desperately needed’:

“Matip the hero as his late header secures a dramatic Champions League victory at Anfield. The boost Liverpool’s season desperately needed going into the international break. They dug deep after Kudus had cancelled out Salah’s opener.”

The Verdict: Confidence lift

Liverpool have had a hugely underwhelming start to the new season in the top flight, picking up just nine points from a possible 18, and their lack of fluidity and confidence was evident against Napoli.

Victory over the Dutch giants should indeed give them a boost moving forward as Klopp prepares his team to face their last group opponents in Rangers, with an extended break coming their way due to the postponement of the Chelsea fixture.

The boss will be hoping that this regained form can be transitioned into the Premier League if he wants to give his side a serious chance at competing on all fronts throughout the remainder of the campaign.
