Dejan Lovren is a hit and miss figure at Anfield. Sometimes, the Croatian can be a fan-favourite when he’s on song for his rock solid defending and ability to rile up the oppositions. However, he can also be a walking calamity, so when Jurgen Klopp brought him on in the dying minutes against Napoli last night, a lot of fans lost their minds.

For some fans, the pressure was too much to bear. The game was finely poised at 1-0 to the home side, and as things stood, Jurgen Klopp’s men were going through to the Champions League last 16. It wasn’t done and dusted, though, as a Napoli goal would see them progress at the Reds’ expense. So to see a new centre-back come on who had no feel for the game and history of comedic errors was enough to send the home fans’ heart rates into triple figures.
In his time on the pitch, Lovren had very little to do. The Croatian did what he had to do, and would have had his heart in his mouth when Alisson was forced into the save of his life, but ultimately didn’t make the error that the fans feared he would. The full-time whistle eventually came, meaning that Lovren’s chances of going one better than he did last year are still alive, even if the supporters would rather see him keep his place as a substitute.

The Kopites will be elated that they’re into the Champions League last 16, and will be even more delighted that Lovren didn’t ruin it all for them.
