Liverpool mull over late transfer raid

Liverpool are yet to make a move for Football Transfer Tavern favourite Shay Given but may come in with a late bid for the Aston Villa stopper, according to the Birmingham Mail.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has allowed Pepe Reina to join Italian side Napoli on loan for the season and so is looking for back up to cover new number one Simon Mignolet who has impressed since joining from Sunderland this summer.

Mignolet saved a last gasp penalty against Stoke City to earn the Merseyside club all three points on the opening day and the Belgian is yet to let a goal in this season.

Given has struggled to break into the Villa side over the past 18 months with United States international Brad Guzan now the definitive number one under Paul Lambert.

Former Newcastle United great Given has been told he can leave the West Midlands club if the right bid comes in for him but swapping the Villa Park bench for the Anfield bench would not be seen as much of a step up.

Newly promoted Crystal Palace have also shown an interest in the Irish keeper and playing time at Selhurst Park would be achievable, especially after two defeats from two for Ian Holloway’s side.

However Liverpool appear to be the only club in for Given at this stage and so the Premier League legend will have to make a decision as to which bench to warm for the new season.

Will Given swap Villa Park for Anfield before the close of the window? Would it prove a sensible signing? Let us know your thoughts below.
