The Liverpool Echo have a brilliant claim for us here in the Football Transfer Tavern and it has certainly got out punters putting down their pints and looking up in interest.
The publication claim that the Reds are now eyeing a move for Schalke’s Greek international defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos. The cenrte back or defensive midfielder is currently rated at around £12 million and despite missing the second half of the Bundesliga season with injury is still considered as one of the hottest prospects in football and a top class defender at that.
Liverpool are of course looking to replace the superb Jamie Carragher who retired at the end of the season in an emotional last game skippering the side against QPR at Anfield and not only will his defensive skills be missed but also his leadership traits. Now it seems Brendan Rodgers feels he has found his new fangled Carragher and is set to table a bid for the 21-year-old Greek.
The player is currently under contract at Schalke yet the club may be willing to let the youngster go if the price is right or could even look at one of Liverpool’s out of favour players in a player plus cash deal.
Do Liverpool stand a realistic chance of luring the Greek international to Anfield this summer? Rate this rumour below.
