The Leeds United fans in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to the imminent arrival of Abel Hernandez, but there is reason to suggest that another former Hull City player should join him at Elland Road next season.
The Premier League’s top-six sides have plenty of talented young players who are knocking on the door for a first-team call-up, but breaking into the clubs competing for honours at the summit of the table has always been a hugely difficult task for any aspiring professional. Loan deals represent the perfect solution to a glaring problem, and Leeds United should offer an ideal place to develop for one of Liverpool’s most promising young players, namely Harry Wilson.
The 21-year-old Welsh international has been widely tipped for a bright future in English football throughout his youth career at Anfield, but he has failed to break into Jurgen Klopp’s plans just yet. His lack of senior football forced him to embark on a short-term loan spell at Hull City last season, and it’s fair to say he was a resounding success in the Championship.
Wilson managed to notch 7 goals and provide 4 assists from just 13 appearances for the club, taking his total number of goals to 17 for the season in all-competitions. With direct dribbling at the core of his game, Wilson consistently served as a menace to defenders in the Championship and his statistical record speaks for itself.
The extent of his development suggests he is ready for another step up next season, but with Mo Salah ahead of him in the pecking order it seems unlikely that he will be given an opportunity. With that in mind, Leeds would be foolish not to approach Liverpool for a loan bid for his services, as he possesses the ability to push the Whites towards promotion next season.
Wilson is the type of player which fans love to watch: he is prepared to take risks and drive at his opponents with pace, flair and trickery, so providing Klopp doesn’t have bigger plans for him, Leeds must do everything they can to secure a season long loan deal this summer.
