Chelsea’s campaign has unravelled into one to forget, with instability both on and off the pitch derailing any sense of progress.
A season that began with optimism quickly turned chaotic, as Enzo Maresca was replaced by Liam Rosenior, who himself was dismissed after a miserable run that saw the team fail to score across five consecutive Premier League matches.
While there is still a slim chance of salvaging silverware in the FA Cup, their league form has left them with a mountain to climb in the race for a top-four finish. Considering the level of investment poured into the squad over the summer, the overall picture has been underwhelming, with performances failing to match expectations.
And now, amid all that uncertainty, there are growing indications that one of their key players could be attracting serious attention elsewhere.
Man City Plotting Move for Enzo Fernandez
Manchester City are weighing up a potential summer approach for Enzo Fernandez as Pep Guardiola reviews his midfield options ahead of a likely squad reshuffle.
According to The Athletic, the 25-year-old Argentina international, described as “outstanding” by recently sacked former Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior, is one of several names under consideration.
Any move remains at a tentative stage, with City also assessing other possibilities in the market, including Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson. The club are casting a wide net as they plan for both immediate needs and longer-term balance in midfield.
A significant factor behind this interest is the expected departure of Bernardo Silva, who is set to leave when his contract expires, bringing an end to his long association with the club. At the same time, questions linger over Rodri’s future. Although his deal runs until 2027 and Guardiola has publicly backed him to stay, the midfielder has previously acknowledged a desire to return to Spain at some point in his career.
Fernandez remains under a long-term contract at Chelsea until 2032, but his situation is not entirely straightforward. The midfielder has hinted in recent months that he could reassess his future depending on how discussions with the club unfold after the World Cup.
Since arriving from Benfica in January 2023 for a then-British record fee, Fernandez has been a regular presence in the side, making over 160 appearances and contributing to their Club World Cup and Conference League triumphs. However, ongoing contract talks have yet to produce clarity, and his representatives have suggested that alternative options could be explored if no agreement is reached.
For Chelsea, the prospect of losing a central figure like Fernandez would only deepen the uncertainty surrounding the club. For Manchester City, meanwhile, this feels less like opportunism and more like careful succession planning—identifying players capable of stepping into a midfield that may soon look very different.
