However, after a summer splurge that broke records, reports from the Manchester Evening News have come as somewhat of a damp squib.
They claim the Red Devils are unlikely to make a move for Southampton defender Jose Fonte, who is reported to have handed in a transfer request on the south coast.
The Portuguese was linked with a move to Old Trafford over the course of the summer, though the partnership of Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones has impressed under Jose Mourinho.
While the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ is believed to be an admirer of the 33-year-old, it’s thought he is happy with his lot in central defence as things stand.
Both Chris Smalling and Daley Blind can operate as cover for the pair, while Eric Bailly will be available for selection after the African Cup of Nations this month.
