Since Jose Mourinho’s Man Utd departure, all the talk at Old Trafford has been about who is going to replace him long-term. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s’s run as boss has gone well so far, though his lack of experience is somewhat concerning. However there aren’t many top-level managers currently out of work, and so it’s not going to be easy for the Red Devils either way.
Only one thing is certain at present, and that’s the fact that Solskjaer’s current contract expires at the end of the season. Who is going to be the manager beyond that is anyone’s guess, but that isn’t stopping the club preparing for the summer transfer window, it seems.
The Verdict
Man Utd aren’t wasting any time, but given that the club have moved slowly in previous windows, that’s probably a good thing.
It is telling that despite no news on a permanent manager, the Red Devils are already listing up their targets, which perhaps does suggest that they at least know what type of manager they’re after.
Kalidou Koulibaly would be an ideal name, as he’d certainly help fix Man Utd’s defensive problems, whilst Douglas Costa would add some class going forward. Interestingly, three out of the four names mentioned are defenders, and that perhaps goes a long way to showing what the Man Utd view to be their most pressing positional concerns.
Could this be a sign that Solskjaer is going to stay? That’s probably a stretch, but you’d think that the club wouldn’t be drawing up a list of targets without at least having an idea who they’re going have in the hot seat. At present, Solskjaer is certainly the favourite – but we obviously don’t yet know.
Either way, Man Utd are preparing for life after the end of the manager’s contract – regardless of whether he stays or goes.
