Man Utd are confident: Mourinho wants even more investment after Sanchez signing – report

The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern have spent the last 24 hours celebrating the news of Alexis Sanchez’s arrival at Old Trafford. After one of the longest transfer sagas in recent memory, Sanchez eventually moved to Old Trafford on Monday, likely leaving all Man Utd fans feeling delighted. 

Whilst many will now feel that their side’s transfer work is done, it doesn’t appear as though Jose Mourinho is of the same opinion.

According to the Independent, Mourinho’s transfer plans have undergone a bit of a rejig following the arrival of Sanchez – with his attention now firmly focused on recruiting a new central midfielder. The Independent report that Mourinho’s short-term transfer plans involve finding more quality in the middle-of-the-park – with Nice midfielder Jean-Michel Seri reportedly a top target.

Man Utd are also said to be confident in their ability to land Carlos Soler from Valencia and Julian Weigl of Borussia Dortmund. 

Whilst Sanchez’s signing likely took a significant chunk of change out of Man Utd’s budget, it doesn’t appear as though Jose Mourinho is happy with the investment yet – with his demands still sizeable.

Whilst the Man Utd first team is littered with talent, their depth in central midfield is limited at best. Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba have cemented themselves as Mourinho’s first choices in the positions, but beyond that talented duo, his options are few and far between. Michael Carrick is getting on, whilst Marouane Fellaini’s long-term future is unassured. A new recruit, then, will not only serve to give Pogba and Matic a run for their money – but they would also serve as vital depth in a midfield that is sorely lacking it at present.

Jean-Michael Seri has impressed in Ligue 1 this term, offering a creative option from a deep-lying midfield role. Similarly, both Soler and Weigl provide further quality in midfield – having both been regulars for their respective teams this season. Each player would represent a decent option for Man Utd, yet it remains to be seen whether Man Utd will look to sign one, two, or indeed all three.

Landlord’s Verdict

Jose Mourinho is a manager that is always demanding more from his board, but in this instance, he’s probably right. Man Utd’s first team is lacking quality in midfield, and with so many games on the horizon, further depth is needed.

If they are to compete on all fronts this season and next year, they need more options – and this talented trio would certainly provide that.

Whether they can seal the deals, though, remains to be seen – given their likely restricted transfer budget.
