The Spaniard has really become a key part of proceedings at Old Trafford this season, with Mourinho’s midfield trio of Paul Pogba, Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera becoming the cornerstone of the Portuguese manager’s offence.
Ander Herrera, in particular, has impressed – having emerged from the shadows as far more than a utility player. Instead, he is now the perfect transitional piece between the more defence Carrick and through to the more offensive Paul Pogba.
It seems as though Mourinho is enjoying what he is seeing, too, with the Sun reporting that the club are set to activate a one-year extension in the midfielder’s contract.
Herrera reportedly has an option in his contract to extend it by a further year, and Mourinho is seemingly ready to take him up on that. The Sun also note that he could be given ANOTHER deal thereafter too.
Should the report come true, it certainly seems as though Mourinho has been delighted with Herrera’s form – and with good reason. The Spanish midfielder has been the perfect deep-lying playmaker in this team, with his tireless running and defensive work rate also on display.
Indeed, Mourinho has certainly been vocal about his support for Herrera this season, with the manager stating during an MUTV interview (via Man Utd’s official website) that he feels as though the Spaniard is having a “phenomenal season”.
He has been a regular feature in the Premier League this season, having picked up 20 appearances in the English top flight.
