Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has dropped an update live on air involving Paulo Fonseca and the currently vacant Newcastle United manager’s job.

The Lowdown: Back to square one

Unai Emery has released a statement claiming that he is now going to stay at Villarreal, meaning that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium are back to square one with regards to trying to find a new permanent manager to take over from the departed Steve Bruce.

Should Newcastle hire Fonseca?

No

The likes of Roberto Martinez and Eddie Howe are names who have resurfaced as a result of the news, but it is now anyone’s guess who the new owners will bring in to take control from interim boss Graeme Jones.

Jones, like Bruce before him, is yet to pick up a win this season, so the Magpies are in desperate need of a proper appointment.

The Latest: Fonseca update

Speaking live on Sky Sports (via Football Daily), Downie has now dropped an update on Fonseca and the possibility of him becoming the next coach at St. James’ Park:

“He’s pretty much made it clear he’s interested in the position, and a source close to him has told us in the last hour that he’d be keen to speak to Newcastle United, to reignite his talks should they still be interested in his services.”

The Verdict: Exciting

Currently in the thick of a relegation battle with just four points to their name, the North East club are in serious danger of dropping down to the Championship from the Premier League, and so bringing in a new manager as soon as possible is vital for their future.

Firstly, the defence needs to be improved, with 23 goals conceded in ten top-flight games the second-most out of any team in the division so far (Premier League).

Only the biggest Newcastle fan will know who all these players signed from! First up, Joelinton...

Fonseca would help massively with this – he has even been described as being ‘similar’ to Thomas Tuchel by his former player at AS Roma Henrikh Mkhitaryan (Football London), the manager with the best defensive record in the league by far with Chelsea, having only conceded three times (Premier League).

The nine major trophies in his cabinet and average of 1.95 points won per game in 453 matches of management (Transfermarkt) show that he is also an exciting fit for the long-term project, and being out of work currently, he should be more attainable for the new owners than someone like Emery.

In other news, find out who Amanda Staveley is ‘confident’ will be the next Magpies manager here!
