A quiet deadline day is expected at Manchester City tomorrow with the club’s pursuit for a new midfielder all but dead.
Manchester City supporters had been hopeful either one of Miralem Pjanic, Mateo Kovacic or Thiago could be acquired after links to the trio emerged (via Goal) following primary target Jorginho’s transfer to Chelsea.
However, manager Pep Guardiola has since gone on to quash those hopes, suggesting that the Premier League champions’ work in the transfer market is done (City Watch via Sky Sports).
Instead, the Spaniard could opt to use £49.5m-rated (via Transfermarkt) defender John Stones in defensive midfield should Fernandinho be unavailable.
Given the fact that Guardiola has Ilkay Gundogan and Fabian Delph — two natural midfielders — to call upon, the idea of using Stones at the base of his midfield three is surprising.
Have a look at what Manchester City fans are saying on the club’s quiet end to the transfer window below…

If there’s nothing good available now, then we wait. No need for panic buys. There’s nothing like Dinho in the market right now tbh. Have to use him sparingly and hope Luiz gets his work permit.

I think this is the best option, we have very good young players like Gomes, Luiz also Zinchenko and delph could play that role
