Riyad Mahrez is likely to be Manchester City’s only first-team signing this summer with Pep Guardiola confirming to Sky Sports that the club will hold off from signing a defensive midfielder for the time being.
On top of Mahrez, Guardiola had hoped to bring in Jorginho to strengthen the base of his midfield, but the Brazilian-born Italy international opted to sign for Maurizio Sarri and Chelsea instead.
Manchester City have since been linked with the likes of Miralem Pjanic, Mateo Kovacic and Thiago (via Goal), but nothing has materialised. And, despite Guardiola’s claim that he does not expect to see a midfielder arrive at the Etihad before the transfer window closes, there are still names floating around including Sevilla’s Steven N’Zonzi.
Italian publication Il Messaggero (via City Watch) reports Manchester City are planning to activate the France international’s £35m release clause ahead of today’s five o’clock deadline to finally give Guardiola the cover he desperately wants for Fernandinho.
Should the Citizens sign £27m-rated (via Transfermarkt) N’Zonzi, then they will be getting a player perfect for Guardiola’s system and a great alternative to Fernandinho in the defensive midfield position.
Have a look at what Manchester City supporters are saying on N’Zonzi below…
Would be an excellent signing for us right now.
Technically good, big and strong
He has EPL experience.
Anyway, AS USUAL……The fans know more than Pep
