A number of Manchester City fans welcomed an update from a “top journalist” from Belgium hinting that Kevin De Bruyne’s future firmly lies at the Etihad Stadium.
The 28-year-old gave an interview to HLN at the weekend in which he said that two years without Champions League football would be a “long” time, with Pep Guardiola’s side being banned from the competition by UEFA until 2022.
However, HLN journalist Kristof Terreur tweeted (via @HLNinEngeland) that De Bruyne is still happy at Manchester City and has three years remaining on his contract at the club, who apparently intend to offer him a new deal soon and appoint him as their captain.
Player says something. One day later he’s been linked with Real and Barcelona.
He’s still happy at City. Has 3 years left and is not actively looking for a move. Man City consider him as their future captain and are expected to make a move for a new contract soon. #mcfc pic.twitter.com/wY5rHWVZm5

As noted by Manchester Evening News, the Belgian midfielder stated in his interview to HLN that he had remained loyal to the club since his 2015 transfer to the Etihad Stadium and did not have his head turned by interest from elsewhere.
These Manchester City fans on Twitter were in fine form after Terreur’s update on De Bruyne’s future:
