Manchester City are confident that winger Leroy Sane will resist any interest from Bayern Munich this summer and remain at the Etihad Stadium.
According to The Mirror, the Germany international has indicated that he has no desire to join the Bundesliga champions.
In May, The Guardian reported quotes from Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge stating that the club were aiming to bring Sane to the Allianz Arena this summer and were preparing a bid of £70million.
However, Manchester City have valued Sane at £100m and, according to The Mirror, they are willing to offer him a weekly wage of £150,000 plus bonuses, an enormous increase on his current £60,000 a week deal which still has two years remaining.
Sane was not an automatic starter for Manchester City last season, having only been in the starting XI for 21 Premier League games and just four of their 10 Champions League matches.
His season’s total of 2,694 minutes was only slightly higher than that of fellow winger Riyad Mahrez (2,551) and significantly lower than Raheem Sterling (4,097) and Bernardo Silva (4,025).
However, the Germany international still scored 16 goals and provided 18 assists, giving him an average of a goal per 168.37 minutes and assist per 149.66 minutes.
Sterling was the highest scorer of the four Manchester City wingers in 2018/19 with 25 goals, while matching Sane’s tally of 18 assists. The England man played far more minutes, though, and his averages work out at a goal per 163.88 minutes and assist per 227.61 minutes.
Silva recorded fewer goal participations (13 goals and 14 assists) than Sane despite having far more game time. The Portugal winger averaged a goal per 309.61 minutes and assist per 292.64 minutes.
Mahrez ended the season with 12 goals and 12 assists, the lowest tallies of the four but also with the least amount of action and his averages were a goal and an assist per 212.58 minutes.
While Sterling’s scoring ratio was the best of the four, Sane was not far behind despite playing 1,403 minutes fewer than the England man. Also, the Germany winger had the best assist ratio of all four players. It’s worth noting, too, that Sane is conventionally a left-sided winger, whereas the other three are all primarily right wingers.
Even though the positions of Manchester City’s attacking players tend to be interchangeable and Pep Guardiola has said he would not block Sane’s exit if the player wanted to leave (according to The Mirror), it’s hard to imagine the Spaniard being happy if he were robbed of a natural left-sided forward.
While he was in and out of the team last season, his productivity in terms of the aforementioned stats and ratios prove what a talent he is and the fact he’s set to remain at the club can only be viewed as a good thing.
If Sane can continue his 2018/19 productivity into next season for Manchester City, Guardiola would surely be most thankful that the 23-year-old resisted any potential overtures from Bayern Munich.
