According to reports in Spain, Manchester City are eyeing up Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips as Fernandinho's replacement.

The Lowdown: Rise of Phillips

Phillips, 25, has been at his boyhood club for his entire career and has made more than 200 appearances for the Whites since making his debut in 2015.

In his debut season in the Premier League, the midfielder burst onto the scene at the international level and he started all seven of England's Euro 2020 fixtures over the summer.

With Fernandinho's time at City slowly coming to an end, a transfer to replace the defensive midfielder is almost certain in the near future.

The Latest: Pep is a big fan

According to the fichajes.net [via Daily Mail], City are considering a move for Phillips as their replacement for Fernandinho this summer.

With Guardiola's trend of rotating his squad throughout the season, it is reported that the ace hailed as 'excellent' by Gareth Southgate would be ideal competition for Rodri.

Fernandinho, 36, sees his contract run out at the Etihad Stadium next summer.

The Verdict: Next step for Phillips

Phillips' surprise inclusion in Gareth Southgate's starting eleven over the summer caught the eye at first but the midfielder more than rose to the occasion, becoming one of England's best performers at the tournament, eventually earning the fans' player of the year title.

Phillips will likely have to leave Leeds at some point to take his career to the next level as he continues his fine performances and replacing Fernandinho at the Premier League champions is certainly a step up.

The £35k-per-week man's performances at Elland Road this season will be on City chiefs' watchlist and a summer move to the Sky Blues would make perfect sense if Fernandinho leaves the club.
