Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is reportedly sitting on the fence about whether to accept a new, improved deal from the club.
The print edition of Spanish publication Sport [via Sport Witness] claimed that the player “hesitates” on whether to accept a new deal worth €20million (£17.96m) a season.
Earlier this week, Manchester United’s official website stated that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was optimistic that De Gea would extend his contract at Old Trafford.
According to Sport, the new deal being offered to De Gea would see him offered €390,000 (£350,000) per week, an increase on his current weekly wage of €223,000 (£200,000) a week.
If the Spain goalkeeper accepts the deal, he would become Manchester United’s second-highest earner behind Alexis Sanchez, who currently takes home €450,000 (£404,000) a week.
In 2018/19, De Gea endured what was statistically his worst season at Manchester United, with the concession of 54 Premier League goals almost double the amount from the previous campaign.
With just seven clean sheets from 38 games, it was the first time in eight years at Old Trafford that he failed to reach double figures in terms of league shutouts.
He made a string of uncharacteristic errors in key games in April, with bad mistakes costing Manchester United goals against Barcelona, Manchester City and Chelsea.
According to Opta [via Sky Sports], he made five errors leading to goals in the Premier League last season, more than in his previous five campaigns put together.
However, De Gea has not become a bad goalkeeper overnight. He is still capable of world-class performances like the one which thwarted Tottenham at Wembley last season. In that 1-0 win for Solskjaer’s men in January, De Gea made 11 saves, just three off the Premier League record of which he is a joint holder.
