The teenage left-back made his first-team debut when coming on during last month’s Carabao Cup match against Rochdale, and he was soon handed a first start in the Europa League clash away to AZ Alkmaar, as well as being named in the matchday squads for the Premier League games against Arsenal and Newcastle. His performance in the AZ Alkmaar game drew huge commendation from United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the manager saying afterwards: “He’s so brave, the courage to take the ball and go forward. Great defending, very pleased, some big, big pluses today.” [via Manchester Evening News]
Williams’ promotion to the first-team picture could see him challenging the likes of Luke Shaw and Ashley Young for the left-back slot, with the former continuing to be plagued by injuries after a hamstring problem in recent weeks and the latter now 34 years of age, although he has started the last five Premier League games.
These Manchester United fans on Twitter want to see Williams come into the team following the signing of his new contract at the club:
Start him against Liverpool

Needs to start on Sunday. Can’t be dealing with watching Young anymore. Ole will still play young tho. Pathetic

Better than Shaw

Rather start Brandon Williams at left back vs Liverpool rather than Ashley Young.

No complaints here. Looks like a fantastic prospect and he should actually usurp Shaw. Might save us having to buy another LB.

Well he is already better than Young

Maybe get him in the team now. No excuse for him not to be first choice left back at this point.
