Manchester United: Fans react to referee appointment for Liverpool clash

Martin Atkinson has been officially named as the referee for Manchester United’s clash against fierce rivals Liverpool this weekend, per the Express.

The 48-year-old was the designated man in the middle when the two sides met last season – Jose Mourinho’s last game in charge of the club before being sacked after a 3-1 defeat by the Reds.

Atkinson is somewhat of a lucky charm for Liverpool, too. Jurgen Klopp’s men are unbeaten in the last 13 games the Dewsbury-born referee has officiated, making his appointment the very last thing United needed this weekend.

The Red Devils are in dire straights at the moment having won just two league games all season.

Currently languishing 12th in the Premier League, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are in desperate need of a result against one of their biggest rivals on Sunday, but know that they’ve got their work cut out considering the fine form their opponents currently find themselves in; unbeaten all season and top of the Premier League.

Here’s how some United fans reacted to the news that Atkinson would be taking charge of this weekend’s game:
