Manchester United fans were furious that midfielder Jesse Lingard was handed the captain’s armband during their 2-1 defeat to Astana in the Europa League on Thursday.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made the decision to hand the local lad the key role in the team as the Red Devils fielded a youthful side as his side fell to defeat in Kazahkstan.
Lingard gave his side a first-half lead after just 10 minutes before conceding two goals in the space of seven minutes in the second period as they came away from Nur-Sultan empty-handed.
Tonight, a boyhood dream came true for me. To captain Manchester United has been a lifelong ambition ever since I joined the club at 9 years old. Manchester is my city, Manchester United is my club. I am truly honoured to captain the club tonight and lead this young team#Honoured pic.twitter.com/tTYmSxK6Ja

Despite his mature performance, United fans couldn’t believe their eyes as the 26-year-old was given the responsibility of leading the team into battle.
Fans were enraged about the decision and made their feelings clear on social media. One fan said that he was completely ashamed of his club because of the great captains of the club’s past.

Bro! You don’t even deserve to pull on the shirt. 27 years in Man Utd and you’re still a squad player. Take a good look at yourself bro, you are Norwich quality.
