Manchester United are planning for Jack Butland's medical 'today', according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Butland talks

The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath broke the news regarding United and Butland on Wednesday morning. He revealed that the club were in talks with Crystal Palace over a move which would see the 29-year-old join for the second half of the season after Martin Dubravka was recalled by Newcastle United.

It looks as if a move may now be close to completion, which would see the English Nike-sponsored goalkeeper become the Red Devils' first addition of 2023.

The Latest: Medical planned

Romano took to Twitter on Thursday morning to break some news he's heard regarding United and Butland.

He revealed that the Red Devils are planning for a medical 'today', adding that documents are being prepared with an agreement in place with Palace for a loan move, which includes no option to buy.

The Verdict: Wise move

Labelled a ‘positive professional’ by his manager Patrick Vieira, Butland previously called United the ‘biggest club in the world’, so you’d expect he is delighted at a pending transfer.

The 29-year-old will offer plenty of experience alongside David de Gea and Tom Heaton, having made 290 senior career club appearances; and you’d expect he may replace the latter as United's number two going forward, with Heaton turning 37 in April.

Butland has also been accustomed to occupying a second-choice role at Palace, and you’d expect that he’s fully aware he would be a backup to De Gea in Manchester, so a move to Old Trafford seems a smart one by the Glazers.
