Manchester United have been linked with a move for Porto fullback Alex Telles, according to a report by O Jogo (via Sport Witness). However, the O Jogo are saying ‘according to a report by Sky Sports’ both online and in newspapers.
The Portugal international is said to have a release clause in his contract at Porto and the Liga NOS side are said to be looking for the full amount.
It has been reported that Manchester United are prepared to bid sum just shy of his release in the coming days as they want to strengthen at fullback.
Links with Telles would seem plausible after the reports the club want to improve their defence in this summer’s window. The Old Trafford giants have been linked with a move for Harry Maguire in this window, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly instructing Ed Woodward to complete a deal.
With Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw as the first-choice at right and left-back, there seems to be a lack of depth after that. The back-up options remain Ashley Young and Diogo Dalot, but both of those players are naturally right-sided players.
A move for Telles really wouldn’t harm Manchester United, however, despite the lack of depth at left-back, he should not be a priority.
There are other positions on the pitch where the club should be focusing on rather than the left-back area, like centre-back, centre forward and central midfield. All three positions need strong reinforcements especially with the club’s defensive record last season and the speculation surrounding Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku’s futures.
Alex Telles is a talented player, as shown by his impressive trophy haul throughout his career, but a move for him is not necessary in this transfer window.
