Manchester United: Harry Kane transfer update

Manchester United are not considering a move for Tottenham striker Harry Kane at this stage, according to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg.

The Lowdown: Kane rumours

The Red Devils have been heavily linked with a move for Kane in 2023, with The Daily Mail‘s Sami Mokbel and Chris Wheeler claiming in January that United are lining up a big-money move for the England captain once this season reaches its conclusion.

Speculation has gathered pace since then, with The Sun stating earlier this month that those at Old Trafford have already ‘made contact with Kane’s camp through a third party and have been encouraged by the response’.

The Athletic‘s David Ornstein has also weighed in on the rumours, adding that United see Kane as ‘among the main options’ to sign at the end of the season, but it looks as if Plettenberg has heard different.

The Latest: ‘News’

Plettenberg took to Twitter in the last 48 hours to provide ‘news’ on United and Kane. He said that the Red Devils aren’t ‘seriously considering’ signing Kane at this moment in time, with Napoli’s Victor Osimhen a ‘more attractive’ option.

‘Been told that MUFC is not seriously considering a transfer of Kane at this stage. The total financial package should be too expensive for the 29 y/o. Osimhen is more attractive for Man Utd’.

The Verdict: Wise move?

Kane has been hailed as ‘world-class’ by Spurs boss Antonio Conte, however, a number of United supporters weren’t exactly thrilled at hearing that contact had been made over a potential transfer. Therefore, they could be excited at this claim from Plettenberg, with Osimhen potentially viewed as a more realistic signing.

The Nigeria international has been called a ‘monster’ by members of the press and has also come in for praise from legendary forward Gianfranco Zola, who described the forward as ‘a pest’:

‘He’s a very complete player. He’s got a good reference going forward, he can link up play and he’s devastating in the air. He’s a pest to defenders.’

He has been in free-scoring form for Napoli this season, netting 21 times and providing five assists in 27 appearances, and at the age of 24, could be a really good addition both in the short and long run.

A new marquee striker is required for Erik ten Hag’s side and is one of their priorities, so hopefully, the club will manage to bring one in, but it doesn’t look as if it will be Kane at the moment.
