Former Leeds goalkeeper Marco Silvestri has told CalcioMercato that Massimo Cellino killed his career at the club for no reason.
The 29-year-old made 98 appearances for the Yorkshire outfit between 2014 and 2017, keeping 23 clean sheets in the process. However, he would end up leaving in July of the latter after failing to make a single Championship appearance during the 2016/17 campaign.
Speaking to the Italian outlet, he has blamed Cellino for the end of his time at Elland Road. He explained: “After the first two seasons I had made 92 appearances and I found myself on the bench for no reason, but by decision of President Cellino. They killed me for no reason.”
Since making the switch to Hellas Verona, it is fair to say he has done a good job. This year, as the side have the fourth-best defence in Serie A, he has started every single match, keeping the opposition out on nine occasions. With a very impressive save percentage ratio of 79.6%, he has even attracted the interest of Internazionale.
Leeds have struggled with goalkeepers recently – Kiko Casilla’s spell at the club has been marred by a racism row, for example. As such, letting Silvestri leave now looks to be a rather big error from Cellino – what they could do with a number one of his quality in the Championship as they look to earn promotion to the Premier League.
