Nottingham Forest manager Steve McClaren is looking to secure a loan deal for Tottenham midfielder Andros Townsend. McClaren will be looking to secure Townsend to a season-long deal to aid Forest’s promotion push.
If the deal is completed, Forest will become Townsend’s seventh loan club in two years. This is not because the player is not valued at White Hart Lane – much the opposite in fact. Still aged only 20, Townsend’s has accumulated a fair amount of experience. A full season on loan would be ideal for all parties.
Though long-term Townsend will push hard for a place in the starting line-up, the current Spurs midfield is currently laden with such quality that were he to stay with the squad, he could only realistically hope for a bit part. The fact Spurs are in the Europa League may benefit Townsend however, for you would imagine Harry will be resting most of the first-team members.
If a midfielder the quality of Niko Kranjcar can hardly get a look-in, Townsend cannot expect to impose himself yet. However, returning in one year’s time, more experienced, hopefully with an injury-free, productive season behind him, and dare I say, with speculation of midfield departures in the air, Townsend can expect to push on from there.
Forest have lacked quality in their opening games in the Championship. The signings of midfielders George Boateng and Jonathan Greening will add experience to a their midfield but someone with the creativity of Townsend will be crucial to any success Forest have this season.
