Arsene Wenger has been linked yet again with a move for French striking sensation, Karim Benzema. The Arsenal boss knows that he’ll need to recruit in the summer, and Benzema is top of his shopping list as he looks to improve his squad for the start of next season’s campaign.
Wenger is a well known fan of Benzema, and apparently made a move when the player was at Lyon. However, at the time the deal fell through, and Benzema eventually moved to Real Madrid. The Arsenal manager never lost interest in the young French player however, and is set to make a move for him again this summer.
It’s a fact that the Arsenal squad need a real shake-up. With Van Persie unable to lead the line by himself, and with other options like Chamakh seemingly not up to scratch, Wenger knows he’ll have to invest in forward options come August. With Niklas Bendtner and Carlos Vela looking like potential casualties of the Arsenal cut backs, Wenger might be finally forced to dip into the Arsenal transfer kitty and spend big.
It will probably take about £25 million to sign Benzema, a figure which is likely to stick in Wenger’s throat. But if he fails to finish the season without any silverware, the well-worn patience of Arsenal fans may finally come to an end.
23 year old Benzema has bene at Real for 2 seasons. He’s made 52 appearances but scored only 17 goals. That sounds like a disappointing return, but Benzema does have previous form. In one memorable season he managed 20 goals in just 36 appearances, so the potential is there.
It’s just a case of whether Wenger puts his hand in his pocket!
