The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are still hopeful that Luke Shaw’s career will turn around. Signed with much fanfare from Southampton, the Englishman was expected to be the man to control the Red Devils’ left-hand side for years to come. However, in reality, his career has suffered setback after setback, with injuries and a lack of trust from Jose Mourinho really halting his development.
Now, contrary to the wishes of most Man Utd fans, it appears as though the Englishman’s career at Old Trafford could be winding down. According to the Mirror, Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho has made a decision on the future of Luke Shaw, and he has decided to move him on – on one condition. The Red Devils are said to be demanding a fee of £20 million in order to let their defender go, with the club clearly keen to recoup as much of their transfer fee as possible.
It’s been a very long road for Luke Shaw, and it seems as though the bumps at Old Trafford are only getting bigger. He’s had poor luck, particularly with injury, but also with the resurgence of players like Ashley Young – who has kept him out of the team all season long.
On a personal note, as much as it will likely pain him, a move away could allow him to access the reset button that he so desperately needs, and so he’ll likely be keen to make a switch. The Man Utd faithful in the pub though – not so much.
Landlord’s Verdict
Shaw doesn’t look likely to be getting a chance at Man Utd, so a move away makes sense for him. Let’s not forget, he’s already had 7 international caps, and he remains highly rated in the Transfer Tavern. He’s good enough to make it at the highest level, he just needs the faith and the opportunity.
That being said, a lot of clubs may be unwilling to spend that much money on a player that has hardly played for two years. Though £20 million isn’t a lot in the modern market, it’s a lot of cash for what is essentially a huge risk for the prospective buyer, and most clubs aren’t willing to risk that much money.
He’ll certainly have suitors, though. It just depends if anyone will cough up that sort of cash.
