The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager for Jose Mourinho to continue his spending spree over the coming months. The Red Devils have spent big since the manager came in, and with the club now within reach of the top of the Premier League once again, a few more big names could put them over the line. It’s going to take a lot to get past Man City, but if any team can do it, it’s Man Utd.
It seems as though Jose Mourinho is as desperate to get this done as the Man Utd faithful are, at least judging by reports from Don Balon. According to Don Balon, Mourinho is ready to personally intervene in his side’s quest to land Atletico Madrid attacker Antoine Griezmann – with the manager reportedly set to meet the Frenchman in an effort to get the deal done.
Jose Mourinho’s role at Man Utd with regards to transfers is often limited to simply stating who he wants, with Ed Woodward tasked with doing the rest, and so this marks a significant change in tactic from the Red Devils. It could certainly work, though, with Mourinho likely carrying more weight than Woodward when it comes to convincing players to sign.
The move, though unusual, would certainly be worth it, too. Griezmann is, without doubt, one of Europe’s finest forwards, and Man Utd certainly have a bit more space for offensive firepower. Able to slot in as a number 9, 10, or – indeed – out on the flanks, Griezmann would be quite the coup for the Red Devils.
That said, Atletico Madrid won’t let him go easily, that much is certain.
Landlord’s Verdict
Griezmann has proven his quality once again this season, with his technical quality, goalscoring and dribbling all coming to light during his stint at Atletico Madrid.
He’s one of Europe’s best players, and any of the top clubs on the continent would likely love to have him at their club.
Man Utd, though, clearly are desperate to land him, and they’ve shown in recent years with the captures of some big names, notably Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku, that they are very good at convincing stars to make the leap.
