Our Tottenham fans here in the Transfer Tavern remain hugely impressed by the job Mauricio Pochettino has done this season.
The Spurs squad is one of the most exciting around in the Premier League with them playing great attacking football and combining it with strong defensive capabilities.
Then, when you throw into the mix that the average age of the squad is one of the lowest around you get a side that is surely only going to get better over the coming years.
They’ll need to qualify for the Champions League to carry that journey on, of course, but it appears that Nabil Bentaleb will not be a part of that.
The midfielder could make his deal at Schalke permanent providing he plays this weekend according to The Daily Mail and it seems likely that will come to pass.
Our landlord thinks Spurs are making a mistake in potentially letting him go, though, and here are three reasons why…
He’s impressed this season
Bentaleb really has done well at Schalke and has shown himself to be a top level midfielder in the Bundesliga.
At Spurs he was limited to just being a holding player but he’s been given licence to get forward more in Germany and that has paid dividends with five goals and five assists in all competitions. None of Spurs’ deep-lying players can compete with that and so maybe they should be re-thinking this.
Room to grow
Indeed, at 22-years-old he’s surely only going to get better, too.
This season he has shown that he can add more to his game and our landlord thinks wherever he ends up past this year he’ll be able to go again. Mauricio Pochettino is widely respected as one of the best coaches of young players and so surely he’d feel he can get even more out of a player that is on an obvious upward trajectory.
Spurs’ squad needs extra options
Spurs’ first XI really is as good as any in the Premier League but there are massive question marks over the squad and it’s depth.
Their Champions League campaign was impacted hugely by it and it looks like nearly all the summer signings have flopped with only Victor Wanyama really adding anything. Having quality players in abundance is what Spurs need to do now and so keeping Bentaleb would surely boost that.
