Chelsea’s need for defensive reinforcements has become increasingly obvious over the course of the season.
The prolonged absence of Levi Colwill has left a major gap at the heart of the backline, and those brought in to fill the void have struggled to deliver consistent performances.
Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile and Trevoh Chalobah have all shown flashes of quality, but none have managed to fully convince over a sustained period.
Meanwhile, Tosin Adarabioyo has endured a difficult campaign and now looks increasingly likely to depart this summer.
With uncertainty mounting at centre-back, attention is already turning to potential solutions — and one familiar face may be edging closer to a return.
Ake Drops Chelsea Return Hint
Nathan Ake has sparked speculation over a possible return to Chelsea after reports revealed he is renovating a property close to the club’s training base.
According to The Sun, the Manchester City defender is rebuilding a house near Cobham, with documents suggesting it is intended to become his primary residence — a detail that has naturally fuelled talk of a move back to west London.
The Dutch international has around 15 months remaining on his current deal at the Etihad and has slipped down the pecking order in Pep Guardiola’s squad, raising questions about his long-term future at the club. A summer exit would not come as a major surprise given his reduced role.
Ake — described as “exceptional” by Guardiola — would represent a notable shift from Chelsea’s recent transfer strategy, which has largely focused on recruiting younger players with long-term potential. However, his experience could prove invaluable, particularly for a squad that has at times lacked leadership and stability at the back.
The 31-year-old began his career at Chelsea after joining from Feyenoord as a teenager, even making his Premier League debut at just 17. Despite early promise, he struggled to cement a regular place and eventually left permanently for Bournemouth in 2017 following several loan spells.
While nothing is confirmed at this stage, the signs suggest Ake could be positioning himself for a return to familiar surroundings. For Chelsea, bringing back a proven, experienced defender could offer much-needed stability — and fans calling for more established figures may see this as a move that finally balances youth with experience at Stamford Bridge.
