The Evertonians in the Transfer Tavern are feeling disappointed after an improved performance went unrewarded during a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea in the Caraboa Cup yesterday evening.
Everton travelled to Stamford Bridge last night under the leadership of caretaker manager David Unsworth for the first time, following the sacking of Ronald Koeman on Monday morning. The match represented the first opportunity for Unsworth to prove his credentials to the Everton board, as he begins an ongoing interview in which his position will be assessed from game to game.
Chelsea looked a considerably stronger outfit during the first-half, and took a thoroughly deserved lead after Charly Musonda whipped a cross towards the back post where Antonio Rudiger was waiting unmarked to perfectly place a header into the far corner.
However, Rudiger’s goal seemed to inspire Everton into a vastly improved second-half performance. Unsworth’s team-talk inspired a fightback from his Everton side, who came closest to equalising through exciting prospect Ademola Lookman when he clipped the top of the bar with a curling effort as Everton pressed for an equaliser.
Despite a diligent performance in the second half from Unsworth’s men, they failed to equalise and Willian secured victory for Chelsea in injury time with a sensational strike following a neat one-two with Cesc Fabregas inside the box. Calvert-Lewin bundled the ball home for a consolation goal shortly afterwards, but it was too little too late for the Toffees.

In his post-match interview, Unsworth duly noted some praiseworthy aspects of Everton’s performance that will give the club encouragement moving forward.
Unsworth’s analysis of his team’s performance has impressed large sections of the Everton faithful on Twitter.
However, it is imperative that Unsworth builds on this performance with a victory away at Leicester on Sunday, if he wishes to take on the vacant managerial position at Everton.
