Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has sustained an injury during World Cup training with Brazil, according to reports in the last 48 hours.
The Lowdown: Bruno selected for Brazil
The Premier League was taken by storm following the 25-year-old’s arrival in January, and his impressive performances at St James’ Park have recently seen him rewarded by his country.
Guimaraes was named in Tite’s 26-man squad to represent Brazil at the World Cup in Qatar later this month, although there have been a few concerns after a worrying update emerged from the Selecao’s training camp.

According to UOL (via Sport Witness), the Newcastle maestro required ‘medical assistance’ for a ‘relatively long’ period of time following a ‘challenge’ from Liverpool’s Fabinho in Brazil training on Wednesday, which coincidentally was Guimaraes’ 25th birthday.
The Magpies talisman ‘complained about pain’ in his right foot in the aftermath, with a ‘hole’ appearing in his boots, showing the severity of the tackle.
Despite the injury scare, it’s claimed that he is ‘fine’ and has now ‘returned’ to training with the squad, in what will be positive news for everyone to hear.
The Verdict: Relief for Newcastle
Guimaraes has been dubbed a ‘leader’ by Jacek Kulig, and it will be a massive relief for Eddie Howe and Newcastle to learn that the player hasn’t picked up anything serious given the impact he has on the team.
The Rio de Janeiro native has scored eight goals and provided three assists in just 31 appearances for the Magpies, and he currently averages 2.6 tackles and 1.3 key passes per league game (WhoScored).
Those returns place him first and second respectively for those metrics among Howe’s squad, illustrating his important at St James’ Park.
Brazil’s opening game of the tournament comes against Serbia next Thursday, and Guimaraes will be hoping to continue his fine form from club level to get the nod to start on the biggest international stage of all.
