Newcastle face PL battle for £60m “mini Salah”

Newcastle United have a long-term interest in Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo, but they could face a challenge in their pursuit of signing him this summer.

The Magpies were back in action this weekend in the Premier League, taking a point away from the AMEX stadium in their difficult clash with Brighton and Hove Albion.

Champions League qualification is the goal for Eddie Howe and his men in the remaining fixtures of their campaign, and the tight battle for European spots is likely to continue until the final day.

Newcastle are currently fourth in the top-flight table ahead of Chelsea on goal difference, and the North East giants will have an opportunity to widen the gap with the Blues when they host them at St James’ Park on Sunday.

Off the pitch, Paul Mitchell will be working on the recruitment plans for the summer as the club endeavours to build on the success of their Carabao Cup trophy win.

The Telegraph are reporting that Manchester United intend to compete with Newcastle for the signing of Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo this summer.

With a £60m price tag, the talented forward is looking increasingly likely to leave West London this summer to take the next step in his career after an outstanding season.

The report notes that Newcastle retain their strong interest in the player, with a previous report claiming that Eddie Howe would love to sign the Cameroon international.

Will Newcastle sign Bryan Mbeumo?

There is no doubt that bolstering the attacking threat will be a top priority for the Magpies and Mbeumo has both the talent and Premier League experience to be a great asset.

Following the January sale of Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson set to be out of contract this summer, there is ample opportunity to reinvest in the forward line to boost contributions alongside Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon, Jacob Murphy and Harvey Barnes.

Over 35 Premier League appearances, the 25-year-old – hailed a “mini Salah” by talkSPORT presenter Jason Cundy – has scored 18 goals, registered six assists and created a whopping 16 big chances so far, only Isak has scored more goals in Newcastle’s forward line.

In fact, Mbeumo has scored more league goals than Murphy and Barnes combined this season, and if he could put up those numbers next season, it would put Newcastle in a great position to compete comfortably in both European and domestic competitions.

Indeed, a move to Manchester United will be challenging to compete with financially for Newcastle, as the Red Devils are more likely to offer a more lucrative package, however, given Newcastle’s progress in such a short time since their takeover it should be a better move for him from a football perspective.

With that being said, it will be interesting to see if Newcastle can tempt Mbeumo to their ambitious project this summer, but should not be a difficult deal to pull off if they secure Champions League football.
