Newcastle to “intensify” interest in “world-class” £47m star

Newcastle United are yet to make a first-team signing ahead of next season’s Champions League campaign, but there is still plenty of time.

The Magpies are expected to complete a deal for Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford in the coming days, with a second improved bid for Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga also reportedly on the table.

The current squad are expected to be back in training for pre-season on Monday (7th July).

They’ll head to Celtic Park for their first friendly on 17th July, then fly to Singapore just three days later for the tour, so anticipation is understandably growing over what business will be done before the season kicks off.

That said, star striker Alexander Isak was signed on the 22nd of August in 2022 and very quickly made a lasting impression on the St James’ Park faithful, so there will be an element of trusting the process as Newcastle plot their moves.

According to LFC Transfer Room editor-in-chief Matt Thielen, Newcastle are set to intensify their interest in Liverpool forward Diogo Jota.

The transfer insider posted to X to make his claim about the Portuguese star:

“Newcastle are expected to intensify their interest in Diogo Jota & test Liverpool’s resolve regarding the forward following João Pedro’s transfer to Chelsea.”

It was reported by Caught Offside last month that the Premier League champions have set an asking price of up to €55m (£47m).

Will Newcastle sign Diogo Jota?

There is no doubt that Jota would bring an incredible winning mentality and unrivalled experience at the highest level to the Newcastle dressing room, but it would be a large investment to secure his services.

The 28-year-old Portugal international was integral in Jurgen Klopp’s success at Liverpool, but his injury record would be a massive concern, as well as his most recent form in Liverpool’s title win.

Over 37 appearances last season, Jota – once hailed as “world-class” by Klopp – managed only nine goals and four assists in all competitions, a significant decline from the 15 goals and five assists he recorded in five fewer matches the previous campaign.

Having said that, the talented forward would offer Newcastle incredible versatility with the ability to play comfortably across the front and has delivered a goal contribution every 112 minutes during his Liverpool tenure.

All things considered, it would be surprising to see Newcastle spend £47m on Jota given his age and injury record.

However, if he can remain fit, he would bring much-needed experience and a goal threat in the final third.
