Newcastle in the race for £40m “special talent”

Newcastle United had a slow start to their summer transfer window but are now embroiled in a messy striker saga with the Premier League champions.

This week, reports emerged that Newcastle were pushing to sign Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitike, though negotiations remain ongoing over an acceptable fee.

That pursuit prompted Liverpool to approach the club about the possibility of signing Alexander Isak.

However, it has been reiterated multiple times that the Swedish sensation is not for sale this summer.

Liverpool’s reported rejection has since turned their attention towards Newcastle’s target Ekitike, with both clubs now battling to secure the Frenchman’s signature ahead of the new season.

Amid the ongoing media frenzy, Newcastle finally agreed a deal worth over £12m with Leeds United for midfielder Sean Longstaff.

It remains unclear whether the club feels an urgent need to replace him at this stage, but fresh reports suggest they may look to raid their Ekitike rivals.

Former Manchester United and Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown has exclusively told Football Insider that both Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Liverpool star Harvey Elliott.

Brown told the publication:

“There’s no shortage of interest in Harvey Elliott,”

“Newcastle and Tottenham are the latest names I’ve heard, both of them are going to test the waters and see what it would take to bring him in.

“They’ll speak to his agent and find out what he’s asking for and what Liverpool are going to want.

“Both clubs will know what he can do, they’ll know the pros and the cons, and they’ll weigh those up against his price tag before making a move.

“He doesn’t have much of a place at Liverpool any more, so they’re ready to let him go.

“It could be one that drags on until late in the window, because he’s going to have to consider all of his options before making a final decision.”

How much will Harvey Elliott cost?

Lewis Miley and Joe Willock already provide solid depth in Newcastle’s midfield, but it’s no secret that Eddie Howe has a soft spot for promising English talent.

Lewis Hall, Tino Livramento, Harvey Barnes and Anthony Gordon have all flourished under Howe’s guidance, each developing significantly since joining the Magpies.

Elliott enjoyed regular game time and development under Jurgen Klopp, but since the arrival of Arne Slot, his minutes have dropped during Liverpool’s Premier League-winning campaign.

Despite being just 22 years old, the England U21 star – once hailed a “special talent” by LFCTV pundit Neil Mellor – has amassed a wealth of senior experience in both the Premier League and on the European stage.

With Newcastle preparing for a return to the Champions League, additional experience in European competition could prove vital, and Elliott, with 14 appearances and five goals in European fixtures, may offer just that.

Not only that, Elliott is extremely versatile with the ability to play in multiple roles with full confidence, which is a trait that Howe particularly admires when recruiting for his squad.

In terms of fees, it is reported that Liverpool want £50m for their young talent, but would be happy to accept £40m.

Newcastle will need to weigh up whether the financial commitment is necessary in a summer when many other areas of the squad require depth, including the defence and goalkeeper roles.
