Newcastle fans are understandably buzzing after their late victory over Chelsea on Saturday evening, and plenty are singling out Joelinton for his role in the win.
If ever there was a game that summed up Steve Bruce’s Magpies, it was this one. Chelsea were the better side for nearly the entirety of the match, racking up 70% of the ball, 19 shots and ten corners, while also completing a whopping 554 passes to Newcastle’s 189, per Sofascore.
That said, it was the hosts at St James’ Park who had the two best chances of the game, and they converted one of them right at the death through Isaac Hayden. The other big chance of course fell to Joelinton in the first half, and although his header struck the bar, the Toon Army were delighted by his contribution.
It was the Brazilian’s lung-busting run down the touchline that earned the corner leading to the goal, and he also racked up some incredible numbers throughout the match. Per Sofascore, the 23 year-old won 13 of an attempted 30 aerial duels – the next closest was Andreas Christensen, who won just eight. The big number nine also earned three free-kicks and made two tackles.

Credit to joelinton, he won that corner that got us in a position to go forward and score! He might not be prolific and a lot of fans are on his case but that guy does so much more. He got stick but his head hasn’t dropped. Well in Newcastle! Who’s that team we call United #nufc

Joelinton was outstanding too. Never gave up, always kept fighting and hassling, hit the bar and won the corner that led to the goal from a nothing situation. Give the big lad his due
