A number of Newcastle fans were left cursing striker Joelinton after he twice had goals ruled out for offside this afternoon.
The Brazilian twice had the ball in the Oxford net at St James’ Park in today’s 0-0 draw in the FA Cup, only for the officials to thwart him on both occasions. He first breached the visitors’ defence in the 53rd minute, finishing to the net from Allan Saint-Maximin’s pass, but a VAR check led to the goal being chalked off. He found the net again just after the 70-minute mark but was again adjudged to have been offside. [via Chronicle Live]
The 23-year-old, who cost a club record £40m from Hoffenheim last summer (as per BBC), has had a tough first season on Tyneside, with only two goals from his name after 27 appearances for the club. He was recently criticised by Alan Shearer on BBC’s Match of the Day, with the Newcastle legend saying that Joelinton “has to improve rapidly“.
These Magpies fans on Twitter lamented his offside double today, with some comparing him to ex-Geordies striker Papiss Cisse, who had once been included in a list of the Premier League’s most caught offside players (as per themag.co.uk):

Has Joelinton now got as many disallowed goals in one game as he has scored legit goals in all competitions?
