Newcastle fans over the last few years have learned to hate clashes with Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby. The Magpies were on the wrong end of the longest losing streak in the history of the derby between 2013 and 2015 when they fell to six consecutive defeats, yet now that the Mackems are in League One they don’t miss the fixture one bit.

Today is the official three-year anniversary since the last time the two sides played each other in a competitive senior fixture, obviously not including the recent fixture that saw the Magpies’ U21 side travel to the Stadium of Light. However, the Geordies all seem fine with not facing their arch-rivals, and will hope for the lack of fixtures against the Black Cats to continue.
The last game that was played out between the two sides finished 1-1 at St James Park. It was Rafa Benitez’s first, and so far, only experience of the clash and if it wasn’t for a late Aleksandar Mitrovic equaliser then he would have seen his side fall to their 7th consecutive derby day disaster. Since then, though, the Geordies have enjoyed watching Sunderland fall and have taken great pleasure from watching the Black Cats cry on Netflix.
