Newcastle fans have had it rough at times this season, that much is for sure, but yesterday was a game and a day to remember. Rafa Benitez and the Magpies welcomed Southampton to St James Park and thanks to Ayoze Perez they won 3-1, with the sublime Spaniard scoring a treble as they saw off the Saints.

By scoring that treble against Southampton, Ayoze Perez became the first Newcastle man to bag a Premier League hat-trick since Geroginio Wijnaldum scored four against Norwich back in October 2015, and it was just the third time that the Magpies have found the net three times in a league game this season. Perez still managed it though and is now the Magpies’ top scorer in the league this season.
His hat-trick took him from eight goals to eleven, usurping Salomon Rondon in the process, although without the big Venezuelan his hat-trick wouldn’t have happened as he assisted the second of Perez’s three and worked tirelessly, holding up the ball as a harrying lone striker for Perez to get space. Now, though, it’s all about building on this ahead of next season and the Geordies will hope Perez can go into the 2019/20 season and better this season’s goal tally.
