Newcastle remain in the mix to sign £40m “absolute gem”

Newcastle have long been admirers of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, and this summer, after a failed attempt 12 months ago, they face strong competition to secure his signature.

The Magpies were caught in a public tug-of-war with the Eagles last summer, making several bids for the talented centre-back, but ultimately failed to reach an agreement.

Twelve months later, Newcastle continue to be involved in conversations regarding Guehi’s situation at Palace, where he is now in the final 12 months of his contract.

Reports have emerged this week to suggest that Premier League champions Liverpool have pushed their way to the front of the queue to secure his signature, though no bid from the Reds has been submitted as of yet.

It is thought that Palace are keen to cash in on their skipper – hailed as an “absolute gem” by Michael Beale – to prevent him from leaving on a free transfer in 2026, though it has been claimed that he would be happy to stay at Selhurst Park for their upcoming Europa League campaign.

Despite strong links to a potential move to Anfield, it is reported by The Guardian that Newcastle remain in the mix to sign Guehi this summer.

Senior reporter Jacob Steinberg claims that Guehi will not be pressured into deciding his future, but he has no intention of extending his stay at Palace beyond next season.

Steinberg further notes that Newcastle’s Champions League qualification has allowed them to continue their pursuit of Guehi as they look to strengthen their defensive set-up.

How much will Marc Guehi cost?

There’s no doubt that a Liverpool  move will hold strong appeal for Guehi, given their recent success and ambition to remain at the top, backed by the impressive transfer business they’ve already completed in recent weeks.

However, with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate strong competition for the 24-year-old to displace, he may feel that opportunities in the first team will be limited to an extent in his immediate future.

Whereas on Tyneside, the squad is crying out for fresh legs in the centre-back roles with Fabian Schar and Dan Burn well into the latter stages of their career and the Swiss defender, in particular, only signing on for another 12 months.

Palace are expected to demand at least £40m for Guehi, £20m less than the fee Newcastle were quoted last year – a significant opportunity to sign a proven Premier League defender with enormous potential, valuable experience and youth on his side.

That being the case, it would make perfect sense for Newcastle to continue their pursuit of Guehi, as they may be able to offer him a more appealing immediate opportunity than their competitors.
