Newcastle join the race to sign £43m PL “genius”

Newcastle United are expected to be big spenders in the summer transfer window following their Champions League qualification and are already being linked with several Premier League stars.

The Magpies completed one of their most successful campaigns in their history last month, and manager Eddie Howe will be wanting to build upon their recent success by reinvesting in the team to compete comfortably next season.

It is no secret that Newcastle have had their fair share of financial hardship over the last two seasons, struggling to recruit healthily due to PSR restrictions.

18 months of discipline, excellent business on outgoings and a boost in finances thanks to their European qualification have all contributed to their ability to flex their financial muscle with more freedom this summer.

It has been frequently reported that the club are clear on their recruitment strategy and priorities, with efforts to bolster the attacking threat and defensive setup the clear objectives ahead of next season.

However, they have already missed out on two attacking targets with Bryan Mbeumo and Liam Delap set to play elsewhere after choosing alternative Premier League clubs.

Fortunately, there is still plenty of time for Newcastle to get deals done and bring in top talent that can have a positive influence on their ambitions to compete on all fronts domestically and on the European stage.

According to Football Transfers, Newcastle are one of the Premier League clubs interested in signing Manchester City attacker Jack Grealish this summer.

The report claims that the Magpies will compete with Tottenham Hotspur and his former club Aston Villa to secure the signature of the treble winner, with Spurs set to be the strongest contenders.

It is further noted that Man City will command a fee of up to £43m to part ways with the player.

Should Newcastle sign Jack Grealish?

There is no doubt that Grealish possesses unrivalled European experience and a winning mentality that is rare to find at the level of his achievements, both of which would make him an incredible asset in the Newcastle dressing room.

However, the England international – once hailed a “genius” by Pep Guardiola – will turn 30 in September and would not be a long-term prospect in the attacking threat, which means Newcastle would have to replace him in a few years – something that goes against their current model.

If the club is looking for a short-term solution to add depth in the forward line for their European challenge next season, there are not many players available at that price who have a better understanding of what it takes to win in the Champions League, having played a key role in City’s phenomenal campaign in 2023.

The biggest sticking point is his staggering £300k-per-week wages, which would need to significantly reduce for a warranted move to Tyneside this summer, as there is no way that the club would commit to that kind of wage demand especially for a player his age.

With that being said, it seems incredibly unlikely that Newcastle are in a place where Grealish would be a target that they would seriously consider, given their desire to recruit long-term solutions in the vacant roles.
