Newcastle: Joelinton under fire from fans

A number of Newcastle United fans have voiced their frustration with Joelinton’s display away to Manchester United.

Newcastle headed to Old Trafford with only one point from their opening three matches, having conceded a 96th-minute equaliser last time out against Southampton.

The hosts were third at kick-off after collecting seven points from a possible nine, and were boosted further by the return of superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

Inevitably, it was the former Real Madrid and Juventus man who opened the scoring in first half stoppage time, tapping in from close range after Freddie Woodman spilled Mason Greenwood’s strike from outside the penalty area.

Newcastle then grabbed an equaliser shortly after the break through Javier Manquillo, only to fall behind once again as Ronaldo doubled his tally. Bruno Fernandes added a spectacular late goal to compound the damage for Steve Bruce’s side, with Jesse Lingard making it 4-1 in added time.

How did Joelinton play at Old Trafford?

Joelinton started up front alongside Allan Saint-Maximin in the absence of Callum Wilson, who was sidelined by a thigh injury.

The Brazilian had been limited to substitute appearances in the Magpies’ first three matches of the campaign but he did little to suggest that he should be in the team going forward.

His SofaScore rating of 6.2 was the lowest of Newcastle’s outfielders. He failed to win any of his seven ground duels and lost seven of his 11 aerial battles. The 25-year-old also recorded a passing accuracy of just 53% and was unsuccessful with all three of his dribble attempts, losing possession 15 times in total.

His performance duly drew the ire of many Magpies supporters on Twitter, one of whom dubbed him a “utter garbage man”.

These Newcastle fans critical of Joelinton

“Joelinton hanging Matt Ritchie out to dry best part of that half. Literally the worst #nufc player to ever pull a shirt on”

“Joelinton and Ritchie are the weak area of the team, not surprisingly. Neither look comfortable in their position. Fair play to Matty for hammering a few tackles though.”

“What exactly does Joelinton do for this team, he’s got no direction with his headers. Is he playing centre forward or centre midfield today?? I would have played 4 5 1 today and left Joelinton washing the bibs”

In other news, keeping this man thwarted Newcastle’s transfer plans.
