Newcastle join the race for “special” striker

Newcastle United could be in the market to sign a striker this summer, with Callum Wilson’s future at the club unresolved as he will be out of contract at the end of the season.

The 33-year-old England international has been rarely seen this season at St James’ Park, with only 18 appearances tallied up in all competitions due to injury issues, which is nothing new.

Wilson is renowned for his unfortunate long list of injury incidents, but he has been a reliable contributor at the club when he has been fit, scoring 49 goals and registering 11 assists over 126 appearances.

However, the signing of Alexander Isak has taken the Tyneside club to the next level in front of goal, and the Swedish striker has easily established himself as one of the most trusted players under Eddie Howe, as well as a huge fan favourite.

Indeed, Isak is the undisputed first-choice striker for Newcastle, but with the huge potential of qualifying for the Champions League next season, it will be important to bolster the attacking threat to remain competitive in all competitions.

TEAMtalk are now reporting that Newcastle are one of the clubs interested in signing LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David, who will become a free agent in the summer.

Inter, Liverpool, Arsenal, Barcelona, Marseille and West Ham United are all also named in the report as potential suitors for the goal-scorer’s signature.

It is further noted that Serie A giants Inter have already made a contract offer to the Canada international, so competition will be strong if Newcastle are serious about their interest in him.

Will Newcastle sign Jonathan David?

There is no doubt that Newcastle would be a great destination for David in his pursuit to take his career to the next level, as their project has many attractive prospects.

Not only did the North East giants recently end their major trophy drought, their climb up the Premier League table has been relentless and a spot in the Champions League next season would take them to another level in their ambitions to establishing themselves in Europe.

However, as the publication states there are a lot of elite clubs interested in signing the out-of-contract star and Newcastle would need to make a stand-out offer to win the battle.

The 25-year-old forward – once hailed “special” by ex-Canada assistant coach Steven Caldwell – is enjoying a great season in Ligue 1, scoring 16 goals, tallying up four assists and creating seven big chances over 29 appearances this season.

In fact, David has offered up 109 goals and 29 assists in all competitions over his Lille career so far – with a goal contribution every 126 minutes a consistent output that would be warmly welcomed at St James’ Park.

With that being said, it will be interesting to see which direction David takes for the next chapter of his career and if Newcastle can pull off a deal it would be a monumental signing for the club in their pursuit for success.
