Newcastle United are prepared to splash the cash in January if the club remains out of the relegation zone once the transfer window opens in the winter, reports the Chronicle.
The club spent a decent amount over the summer, which included breaking their transfer record for Brazilian striker Joelinton and spending £16m on Frenchman Allan Saint-Maximin.
Indeed, come January, it seems manager Steve Bruce will be backed even more if his desire were to strengthen his squad, and it could be, considering Newcastle’s long injury list.
The Chronicle states Newcastle are said to be planning at least one signing but that is dependent on the club’s Premier League position. Currently, Bruce’s side sits in 14th thanks to a stunning victory over Tottenham Hotspur three weeks ago and a draw at home to Watford recently.
However, with Mike Ashley running a tight budget ever since his takeover in 2007, Newcastle will be wary of who they can bring in, with the Chronicle reporting a central midfielder is at the top of Bruce’s list.
Despite this, the question will remain on how far away the club are from the drop zone, as the win over Spurs slightly overshadowed the fact the Magpies have scored just three goals so far – the joint-second lowest and just one more than bottom-placed Watford.
Furthermore, arguably the biggest test in European football is up next for Newcastle, with the trip to European champions Liverpool, which may send Newcastle further down the table.
