Newcastle “talks continue” for £40m gem with “huge potential”

Newcastle have maintained a long-term interest in Burnley shot stopper James Trafford, and this summer are keen to get a deal over the line once and for all.

The Magpies are preparing for their second stint in the Champions League under Eddie Howe, and ensuring the squad has enough depth to compete more comfortably in the European competition will be absolutely vital.

In their 2023/24 Champions League campaign, Newcastle were unable to get out of their challenging group, albeit putting up an incredible fight in the process.

The St James’ Park faithful will fondly remember the iconic 4-1 home victory over Paris Saint-Germain, and travelling fans were able to watch their team take a 0-0 draw away from the San Siro against AC Milan.

This time, the Tyneside giants will be wanting to follow in the footsteps of Aston Villa last season to get much further in the competition, with the new format providing a better opportunity of reaching the latter stages.

Injuries and a lack of squad depth were key factors in Newcastle’s struggles during the 2023/24 season, and they’ll be keen to avoid a repeat.

The summer transfer window offers a crucial opportunity to strengthen the squad and ensure they can compete on all fronts.

The pursuit of Burnley keeper Trafford has been in the works for a while now, and after failing to convince the Clarets to part ways with the England international in the past, it is being reported that negotiations continue.

Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has today given an update on the talks between Newcastle and Burnley, taking to X to reveal his most recent information:

“Negotiations between Newcastle and Burnley for James Trafford are underway.”

“Club to club talks continue as the deal can happen from July, so expected to accelerate from next week.”

How much will James Trafford cost?

There is no doubt that Trafford would be the dream successor for Nick Pope in the number one spot for Newcastle, but it would also be a huge loss for Burnley who have recently been promoted back to the Premier League.

The Clarets manager Scott Parker was full of praise for his keeper during last season in the Championship:

“For such a young boy coming into that division, he had some hard times, some challenging times.

“But this is a special goalkeeper. He has absolutely huge potential.

“He is confident, he believes in himself and you need that to get to the top, top level. He has that and he backs it up with what he does in between the posts.”

Given his influence in Burnley’s promotion, losing the 22-year-old goalkeeper would be a major blow as they fight to re-establish themselves in the top flight next season, so it would be naïve to assume they won’t demand a substantial fee to let him go.

Fees between £30m and £40m have been widely reported over the last few months, although that might seem a lot for a keeper with limited Premier League experience, Newcastle will be paying for the potential of having an outstanding number one for over a decade.

With all considered, it could be an incredible investment for the club if they can get the numbers right and seal a deal, if they don’t commit now and Burnley retain their Premier League status, Newcastle could be looking at an even higher fee next summer.
