Newcastle United’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at the weekend further underlined what has been a frustrating and inconsistent campaign.
While the club are not in danger of relegation, their hopes of finishing in the top half are beginning to fade, with performances falling short of expectations across the squad.
Despite a strong foundation and significant investment in recent windows, several signings have struggled to make the expected impact. Nick Woltemade has drifted out of the picture after a promising start, while Anthony Gordon – who has recently been linked with a move away from Tyneside – has shown flashes of quality in the Champions League but has lacked consistency in the Premier League.
However, few players have come under more scrutiny than Yoane Wissa, and it now appears Newcastle are already considering cutting their losses.
Newcastle Willing to Sell Wissa
Newcastle United are open to offloading Yoane Wissa this summer, despite having signed him for a package that could rise to £55 million less than a year ago, according to reports from The Athletic.
Wissa arrived from Brentford on deadline day after a lengthy and difficult negotiation process, with Newcastle eventually meeting the asking price after missing out on several other forward targets. His signing was viewed as a late solution to their attacking needs, rather than the club’s first-choice option.
The move has since come under scrutiny. Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton previously described Wissa as “disgraceful” in relation to how he pushed for his exit from Brentford to secure the switch to Tyneside, adding further controversy to his transfer story.
Since arriving, the 29-year-old has struggled to settle. He has made just 24 appearances and has started only once in the last 16 matches, with injuries and a disrupted pre-season heavily affecting his ability to establish himself in the squad. A knee issue picked up before his first training session further slowed his adaptation.
Although Wissa returned from injury earlier than expected and even opted against international duty with the Democratic Republic of Congo to focus on Newcastle and upcoming World Cup qualifiers, his long-term place in the squad now appears uncertain.
Despite still being under contract and reportedly willing to stay, Newcastle are understood to be actively exploring options to move him on. Any deal would likely result in a financial loss given the size of the initial investment, although a 25% sell-on clause from his previous club could help offset some of the damage.
Wissa’s situation reflects a broader issue at Newcastle this season, where big-money decisions have not consistently translated into on-pitch success. With the club now reassessing their squad structure, his future looks increasingly tied to a summer reset rather than a long-term role at St James’ Park.
