As you can imagine, the Newcastle United fans here in the Transfer Tavern haven’t stopped celebrating since the final whistle blew on a famous win at St. James’ Park yesterday afternoon. Indeed, though life has been difficult on Tyneside this season, beating Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United side will live long in the memory for many.
Our resident Geordies haven’t stopped chanting Rafa Benitez’s name this season and, while the Spaniard has always retained the support of many clad in black and white, yesterday’s win only sees the support for him strengthen. Despite doubts about his future after working under Mike Ashley for a few miserable transfer windows now, it’s easy to see why the two parties seemingly love each other so much.
So, Benitez’s hint at a long-term stay on Tyneside after yesterday’s win have gone down a storm. When asked when beating United was his biggest win in charge of the Magpies, the former Liverpool and Real Madrid coach revealed (via Lee Ryder on Twitter) he hoped there will be ‘better ones in the future’.
